Microsoft is finally discontinuing Windows XP across the globe. Support will definitely end by April 8th, 2014. XP is 14 years old and is completely outdated. It represents a liability to businesses since it is a security risk and Microsoft will not be providing updates nor security patches for XP any more. Having XP on a workstation means leaving a door open to hackers that can obtain company information and pose a threat to your entire network.

If you are running XP on any of its versions you will notice a pop-up message as soon as you start the computer. This message is being pushed by Microsoft and it signals the end of life of the product.

We urge you to contact Telx so we can suggest an update plan to Windows 7 and make sure all your workstations are XP free.

Did your computer just got stuck, and you think you can fix it up on your own. Here are top five things that should be considered by you before you try to fix your own computer.

Try to keep back-up of all the data:

The most common problem that occurs with the computer is that with time they slow down, or they may be infected by downloading a file that is having virus. In such a situation it is advisable to format the system that restores it back to the previous setting. But then after formatting the user finds out that their music, videos or driver’s shows problem which is mainly because these files get deleted during formatting. To avoid such kind of problem it is advice to keep a back up files of the entire driver folder before going for formatting.

Remember the fact that you are not an IT professional:

Today computers are all around us; it is one of the most important electronic devices that are used by companies around the world. But then they also encounter some problem that hinders their operation. In such a situation even if you try everything in your capability you are not able to fix it. In such a situation remember that you are not a qualified IT professional. Just contact a computer repair service provider in your area that can help you by fixing your computer.

Better to operate the system in safe mode to fix the problem:

Safe mode allows the windows to load the internal system critical problems that interfere with the operating system. To reboot the system to the safe mode, restart the computer and as soon as the system is restates start tapping the F8 button. After taping the button two to three times a screen appears that provides the user with the facility to shift the system to the safe mode. One the problem has been fixed computer can be brought back into normal operation mode.

Differentiate the problem, before you try to fix it:

PC problems can be split into two areas, first area comprise of software problems which are the cause of many of the PC problem and the second category consist of hardware problems which usually don’t kick in until the PC is few years old. Before you try anything to fix the problem understand the cause of your problem otherwise you will do more harm other than fixing it.

Restarting the system is not always a solution:

The most common misconception people have is that by restarting their system they can fix the problem but then there is a possibility that it will just exaggerate their problem. Do keep a record of everything you do so that if there is need of an expert they can be made aware about what all was done before the problem occurred.

When receiving an email attachment:
– Do NOT open an attachment if you don’t know what it is.
– Use caution when opening attachments that you weren’t expecting or that you don’t know the content. Computer viruses are sent via e-mail attachments and can compromise your computer, data, financial and personal information.
– When an email attachment has a file extension ends with .zip, .exe, .com, or vbs. 99.9% of the time is viruses, Trojans, malware or spyware.

File Extension examples:
When you see attachment, most of the times you can see an icon on the attachment that will give you an idea what the file is. However, if the file doesn’t have an icon because the file is compressed or the program to open the file is not
installed on your computer.

Another way to identify what the file is about is by looking its file extension.

attachment file extension

File Name File Extension
Word Document: .doc or docx
Word Perfect: .wp
PDF (Adobe): .pdf
Microsoft Excel: .xls or .xlsx
Microsoft Power: .ppt or .pps
Music: .mp3, .wav, .wma , .aac
Video: .mp4 , .avi , mpeg , .wmv,
Pictures: .jpg , .jpeg , .bmp , .tiff , .png or .gif
If you can see the file extension on your computer files or Outlook, call Telx.

Severely infected computers send viruses to other users across the network by using contact list of your email software and shared resources within your office.
– By mentioning this, you might receive an attachment from one of your known contacts; however, these attachments could be infected since their computers are infected on their end. If you open these attachments the likely scenario is that your computer will get infected and your contacts will receive an email that you did not send including infected file as an attachment. If you see a behavior you can notify the sender that their computer is infected or delete the email.

Understanding ZIP Files:
– Zip files are compressed files. The purpose to sending/receiving Zip files is to make attachment size smaller or send multiple files into 1 compressed file.
– Most of compressed files contain files that could be a virus. This is a way that the attacker bypasses the virus/spam protection.

Other Things to consider:
– Shipping companies like UPS, DHL, Fedex, or USPS won’t send you any attachments, all transaction are done through their website. If you are not sure call the shipping company.
– Bank institutions won’t send you links or attachments regarding your statements or wire transfers. You can only check this information on your Online banking by using the bank website.
– If you are not sure whether to open the attachment call Telx to verify if this attachment is not infected.

Email Scams:
– Your bank institution won’t send you an email requesting information or attachments (unless it is a banker from your branch or something you were expecting), statements, requesting to re-enter about your personal information or a wire transfer via email, unless you have alerts setup. The purpose of those emails is to obtain account information from the users.
– Whenever you open a link on these emails, they copy the design of the website making it look legit and the user enters information about their account, next day you will find out the account has been compromised.
– IRS/Equifax/Transunion/ won’t request any information via email, if they do most likely will be via regular mail. Dismiss these emails and don’t open these links.
– Whenever you win or got something for free over an email, the only thing that you can win is a big problem. Delete these emails immediately.

Virus Scams:
– If the FBI, NSA, Department of Homeland Security, or CIA has blocked your computer with a pop-up, these are signs of infections. These pop ups are to cheat users to gain financial information.
– Fake Antivirus protections and optimizers can pop-up during an infection not allowing you to work peacefully.
– These viruses request users to enter credit card information or do a transfer to an account to release their computers, please report these issues immediately.

How to avoid these issues:
– Understanding email attachments.
– Have an updated operating system.
– Have an updated Antivirus protection.
– Have an up-to-date network firewall and gateway security to prevent future attacks.
– Scan your attachments on this website: www.virustotal.com (this will scan your attachment with 60 different antiviruses in seconds). To do so, save the attachment without opening it and upload the file into the website.
– Call Telx if you have any questions regarding an email attachment.

It seems as though every day there is yet another story that hits the headlines about hackers breaking into computer systems and accessing highly sensitive material. Not even government files or the most tightly guarded military files seem to be safe from the prying eyes of the most adept hackers. These days, almost all businesses are forced to have a large proportion of their important data stored electronically, and for many business owners, the security of those files is a constant concern.

For people who are not too technologically minded, it can be highly unnerving to think of the amount of sensitive data that is accessible if the wrong person with the right skills decided to hack it. Personal details of employees, and valuable company secrets could easily fall into the wrong hands and be used for illegal purposes. What every company is looking for is a service that provides around the clock support when it comes to providing online security. Many local businesses searching for computer support contract in Miami will find that Telx Computers appears near the top of most local listings. This is thanks to the excellent reputation and impeccable service record of all Telx Computers engineers.

Telx Computers, one of the industry leaders in Computer IT support in Miami, announces new solutions for businesses wanting to ensure that their electronic files have the best protection possible. Most companies buy a standard security system when they install their basic computer network. But many of them do not understand exactly what they are getting from these systems. Telx Computers, providers of first rate IT services in Miami, advises clients to install the Sonicwall firewalls. The Sonicwall, which will be monitored by Telx Computers technicians around the clock, is considered to be the best system to stop data from being leaked out onto the Internet, and will prevent a virus from leaking in.

Experts at Telx Computers monitor the Sonicwall 24/7 to check that hackers are not getting through it. They also ensure that the software is constantly updated. Many businesses think that they are protected when they buy a simple firewall, but without the support behind it, sophisticated hackers can get information out and viruses in. No company can afford to lose sensitive data, or to have files corrupted, so it makes sense to invest in the best possible security. Smart business owners will spend money on physical security guards and alarm systems to protect their property. They should also apply the same amount of cash and caution when it comes to securing their electronic property. Information is valuable, especially in this digital age, and no business can afford to take risks with IT security. For tech support in Miami, Telx Computers consistently delivers the best service.

Has the age of free-thinking robots arrived? Has artificial intelligence evolved to the point at which computers can actually fix themselves? Not quite. But sometimes, in some ways, it can feel as though this is what is happening. The cyber world moves at a pace that most people cannot comprehend, and technology is being developed at such a rapid rate, they can hardly keep up. With the reliance people have on their computerized lives, they cannot afford any glitches to interrupt the service they need from our computer systems, or their competitors will overtake.

Furthermore, mistakes can be dangerous. Imagine if air traffic control computers were not monitored rigorously and an error went undetected. This kind of mistake could be fatal. Almost every modern business is run by computers these days, and while not all of them have millions of lives dependent on them every day, like air traffic control systems, it would be reassuring for business owners to know that their computer systems are being monitored with the same degree of vigilance. Businesses searching for IT services in Miami will be happy to discover that this level of services is available at Telx Computers.

Telx Computers, an industry leader in Miami computer services, announces new monitoring regimes to ensure computer problems are fixed so fast that users are never even aware of them. Thanks to the dedicated servers and expert computer engineers at Telx Computers, problems are fixed before they develop into issues that could affect the end user. By constantly checking everything that is happening on the servers, and by keeping up to date with any software upgrades and virus alerts, the Telx Computer engineers can ensure that users are hardly even aware that any changes or upgrades have been made. For those end users, it will almost feel as if the computer can think for itself and do its own repairs and upgrades. The goal of Telx Computer engineers is to receive no service calls at all, to fix problems so fast that users never actually know they have occurred. For these customers, looking for computer repairs in Miami will become a thing of the past, as they will hopefully never be aware of the need for repairs. With a service contract from Telx Computers, business owners will have one less thing to worry about. The purpose of a service contract is to ensure that the company employees never have to think about computer repairs and upgrades, because everything will be done behind the scenes. Telx Computers has an ever-increasing number of satisfied customers, and this is one of the many reasons why it is considered to be among the very best IT companies in Miami.

Just like many of the memory shortages you might have heard about, there is currently a hard drive shortage in the market. Recently hard drive prices have begun to creep up and consumers are noticing the difference. Example: While a 1Tb (Terabyte) drive used to cost sixty dollars a couple months back, now the same drive is nearing the hundred dollar mark. Market analysts and some companies such as Apple Co. are warning that prices could jump significantly in the fourth quarter. This jump in price will affect the overall cost of cost of a desktop computer by about 50 dollar. The shortage is due to massive floods in Thailand. Many factories have been destroyed or closed down due to these floods and a good amount of computer components are produced in Thailand including hard drives. The prime minister of Thailand stated that the floods are not expected to recede for about six weeks and even if it happens, roads will have to be repaired to resume logistics.

The HDD drive motor manufacturer Nidec, which supplies between 70-80 percent of the market with motors, is expected to limit production due to flooding. Western Digital, a well-known and respected hard drive manufacturer has indicated that they have about 2 weeks of hard drive in stock. This flood is also affecting companies like Asustek, which is a common manufacturer of motherboards. With these floods experts expect a rise in cost of components and with that the consumer will take a hit until supplies are returned to normal.

Our outsourced IT Services helps expand our clients’ IT capabilities and enhance their operations. We deliver proactive network monitoring, support, and server-scheduled maintenance with fixed-price support programs that keep your IT spending under control.

Operating Systems – The Bridge Between You & Your Computer

operating systemsOn previous articles we gave a very general look at how your computer hardware works. On this article we will approach the next layer or system, which is the Operative System. Computers work with hardware and software. Hardware is made by the electronic/mechanical parts that run low level code that actually controls the computer hardware. Operative Systems operate above the hardware level; providing a bridge between the user applications and the computer hardware.

Popular consumer grade Operative Systems are Microsoft Windows, Apple OS X, or the different Linux distributions. Basically Operative Systems are huge compilations of software/code and data written in low level as well as high level programming languages. Their main function is to manage the computer hardware and provide basic functions on the user level. So this basically means that your OS (Operating Systems) is an intermediary between the complex and low level hardware and the application/software that users have access to.

Operating Systems typical functions on the hardware level are: memory allocation, handling and answering input and output requests, plus so much more! On the user level they provide general applications for hardware maintenance such as hard drive maintenance. The OS main code, or Kernel, also creates and assigns resources to different processes created by the different applications.

Modern Operating Systems are able to multitask. This means that they can handle different processes in a smart way. This happens so fast and it’s so intelligently programmed that users get the illusion that everything is running at the same time on their computer. There is so much that a OS can do by itself; creating a dependence between the OS efficiency and the computer hardware. If the hardware is not on par with the OS, then the OS will struggle trying to provide a smooth user interaction.

There have been several types of Operating Systems since their inception in the 1950s. They all use different techniques and are engineered differently. These details are out of the scope of this article. However, keep in mind that Operating Systems can be found on almost any device running software. You might be familiar with Windows or Mac OS, but you can probably see them at work in your smart phones or home appliances such as TVs or DVRs. At Telx we work every day to keep your workstation and server’s OS running smooth. Configuring and securing them so they can function at their optimal levels of efficiency along your computer hardware.

You Use One Daily, So Do You Know How Computers Work?how a computer works

Most people use one without actually knowing how a computer works. Just in the same way we don’t need to understand how our cars work in order to drive them, we don’t really need t o know how a computer works to use one. However, it is always good to know at least that a car’s engine needs oil to operate, even if we don’t know why. But it’s good to know nonetheless because this helps with the automobile maintenance schedule. I will give an extremely basic explanation on how computers actually function. This will give you a better idea on what to expect from your computer and how to take care of it.

– Software & Hardware –

What Makes Computers Work

The hardware is the electronic parts that are actually tangible. These could be the hard drive, the motherboard, and every other physical component in the computer. There are certain hardware components that a computer needs in order to work. These components are inside your workstation’s tower, for example: The motherboard, RAM memory, Hard Drive, and Processor. These components are essential to a working computer. Monitors, mice, sound cards, and more are also considered hardware and they can be present or not, just depends upon the computer’s system requirements and configuration.

Software on the other hand, is what allows the hardware to work and allow users to operate it. Software is made up of intangible code or instruction sets that tell the hardware how and what to do. Computer hardware would be useless without the software giving orders. The opposite also holds true. Software wouldn’t “exist” without hardware. This is because Software, programs, etc, need to sit or reside on some type of memory storage, let it be hard disk space or RAM memory. Software is processed by the computer’s main processor or CPU.

A Simpler Explanation!

For an easier way to picture how a computer works, compare it with the human body. The main processor would be the “brain,” which handles all the instruction, or “thoughts,” and thus controlling the whole system, including the all of the hardware, complete tasks and perform various functions.
