According to Stephanie Faris, a small business computer expert, despite growing similarities between computers, significant differences still exist:

Even today, as tablets and smartphones have revolutionized the marketplace, there are still definite differences between various brands. Operating system is important, but do consumers keep hardware manufacturers in mind when shopping for new devices? Many small business owners say they do.

Hank Coleman, of Money Q and A, furthers this point:

“I’m simply not happy with the level of technology innovation and subsequent customer service from lesser-known brands,” Hank Coleman of Money Q and A says. “There is a trade-off that consumers must make between price and quality.”

Make sure you make the best computer choice for 2016:

This year’s top spot goes to…

1. Apple

best computer brand

Apple is having a great streak. This pre-eminent technology company encompasses a huge variety of consumer products, noted for their design aesthetic and overall high-quality. Apple also offers an additional perk: they have the highest rated tech support and customer service.

2. Dell

dell desktop computer

Jumping up to second place, Dell’s rise the past year is noteworthy. The company took first place in the categories of innovation, value and selection, as well as in audio.

3. HP

hp laptop computer

HP offers a huge selection of prices, styles and configurations from which to choose, and once you’ve made a decision, you can trust in their award-winning technical support.

4. Asus

asus all in one

Asus has a lot of fans, and that is not just because of its new i7 processor. According to a few reviewers:

“Asus. It’s really good… Have you heard of their E Family? Including Asus EPad Transformer Prime [Tablet], and the E PC’s Well they make the best. Don’t believe me? Search Asus E PC UX21. Its like the worlds thinnest ultra laptop with a i7 core processor. It makes better stuff too, like the E PC X101, netbook as thin as macbook air, Running MeeGO, and you can put Windows7. They work great, last long, and have great quality, slim&Sleek, thin designs. Love it.” – Thetoptens.com

“Asus SHOULD be number 1 because when I used to have an asus, it NEVER used to say “not responding” with windows vista home premium or windows 7 enterprise. But, I accidentally updated the bios, so it stopped starting.” – Thetoptens.com

5. Acer

acer laptop

Acer is renowned for its speed and efficiency at an affordable price point, being compared to HP in many ways:

“Have owned and Acer laptop and used it to 110 percent for 5 years before it finally broke down on me. Hardware failure, mostly due to travel though and not to manufacturing or design flaw. GREAT, RELIABLE machine!”

“Seriously HP has more votes than Acer? Save your money and great a better product that’s worth the money.”

“I have a touch screen acer that rocks!”

“I have an acer c720 it’s the best it runs so much faster than a regular computer, and it’s cheap too! I got mine a best buy for $200, but the only thing I don’t like is that I can’t download stuff off the internet. Overall it’s good because of how fast it is.”

Others great brands are still competing for the rest of the market including MSI, Samsung, Lenovo, and Toshiba.

Are you planning a switch from PC to Mac? Here are a few tips from Telx Computers to make the switch as easy and effortless as possible:

macbook

1. Before the Switch

Become familiar with OS X and Mac in general before making the move.

If you have an Apple Store nearby, then it is easiest to stop by and ask the Geniuses any questions you may have. Be thorough, and take your time; they are used to questions. It is better to slowly transition to OS X and become familiar with the operating system, then to try to switch when you are busy.

2. Know Your Applications

Unless you’re going to be running Windows or a parallel processor on your Mac, remember that Windows apps will not work on a Mac. Products like Adobe Creative Cloud allow you to switch between Windows and Mac as part of your license. However, most applications do not possess this feature, making a possible added cost to users.

3. Data Migration

Data Migration is one of the most important processes to do correctly when switching operating systems.

Apple has comprehensive documentation on how to do this. It is best to read this before your begin to move your data. Or, just get an Apple Retail Store to do it for you.

4. Accessories

There are a nearly endless supply of Apple products to choose from. Here are a few of our favorites

5. Learn Some Shortcuts

Shortcuts = keyboard shortcuts. Here are some of the most popular:

  • Command – C – Copy
  • Command – V – Paste
  • Command – A – Select All
  • Command – W – Close Window
  • Command – Q – Quit app

6. Right-Clicking on Mac

Right-clicking on a Mac can lead you nowhere if you have not enabled ‘Secondary Click’ through System Preferences. If you have a Magic Mouse then go to System Preferences > Mouse and enable Secondary Click

7. Running Windows on Your New Mac

With the latest software, it is now possible to run Windows on your Mac. You have these options:

  • Use the built-in Boot Camp tool
  • Use a third-party tool such as Parallels desktop

Whichever tool you choose, you will still need a valid copy of Windows, and unless you have a spare full retail copy, you’ll need to buy a new one.

8. Backing up your Data

Although Macs are reliable, they are not invincible. Make sure to have a duplicate of your data.

Here are a few ways to secure your data:

  • Use an off-site backup service such as CrashPlan or Backblaze
  • Back up to a local disk – connected to the Mac on the netwok – using Time Machine
  • Use a third-party tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper! Backups to external hard drives.

RELEASE DATE

As we already know, Apple likes to announce new iPhones on Tuesdays, make new iOS updates available to download on Wednesdays and, depending on availability, start selling or taking pre-orders for new devices on Fridays.

Considering a major Apple event reportedly scheduled for Tuesday, September 9, there’s a pretty good chance that iOS 8 will be on the company’s servers on Wednesday, September 10.

History has also taught us that when iOS updates exit beta in September, they spend one last week in a near-final developer state, aka the “Gold Master version.” We can expect that on or around September 3.

Without a question, developers can get their hands on the feature-limited iOS 8 beta now, but the wider audience has to wait a few weeks for the official release date.

COMPABILITY

When it comes to iOS 8 compatibility, Apple requires an iPhone 4S or newer and iPad 2 or newer to update to the latest software. The iPhone 4 is cut from the list.

Both the iPads mini and iPad mini 2 tablets and the forever alone iPod touch 5th generation are also going to work with the new iOS, just like they did with iOS 7. No one besides 2010’s iPhone 4 gets left behind.

As mentioned, iOS 8 beta 5 is available to download right now, but it’s locked behind Apple’s iOS developer program that costs $99 a year (about £58, AU$105 a year).
That’s a significantly small price to pay for app developers who are making money, but it’s not meant for curious Apple fans looking for an early upgrade to new features.

iOS 8 is buggy and unfinished right now and beta 5 isn’t likely to introduce enough fixes to warrant a try. There’s also a non-disclosure agreement attached to the program, so you can only brag so much.

The worst of all, not all features are enabled. It’s best to wait until the more stable iOS 8 Gold Master version arrives one week before the predicted September 10 release date.

TOUCH ID FOR ALL

Apple’s fingerprint scanner has been limited to bypassing the lockscreen and buying iTunes Store content, however, iOS 8 changes all of that as app developers get access to the five-digit login tool.

All sorts of apps will be able to use the biometric scanning home button instead of pesky pass-codes. So far this only applies to the iPhone 5S, but Touch ID is likely to come to the iPhone 6, iPad Air 2, and iPad mini 3 later this year.

At WWDC, banking service Mint.com illustrated how third-party Touch ID authentication will expand beyond its lockscreen and iTunes confines.

PayPal sent its developers to Apple’s Touch ID session at the conference, meaning all of your eBay and e-commerce transactions may be complete with the touch of the home button when upgrading to iOS 8.

Imagine, “Forget password” becoming a thing of the past as the pores in your fingertips act as a much more unique method of protecting your valuable data.

This Touch ID convenience is on top of the fact that iOS 8 is slated to scan credit cards via an iPhone or iPad camera and automatically fill in the details to make online shopping easier.

Of course, Apple went out of its way to say that even though you trust many app developers with your bank account data, they won’t have access to your biometric information. It’s locked away in the A7 processor.

The new iPad 3 hit the shelves in the middle of March 2012. It features the new revolutionary retina display, improved graphics performance, a better camera and faster connectivity.

The main design difference is, of course, the 9.7-inch Retina Display. This new display features 3.1 million pixels with a 2048-by-1536 resolution which is higher than Blu-ray and even higher than a 62-inch Full HD plasma television. No other tablet on the market can surpass the display quality on this new device.

The main processor is the same as the iPad 2, although the chip has been updated. The included chip is now the A5X processor which replaced the A5 featured in its predecessor. The difference mainly rests on the graphical capabilities. This new quad core graphics processor alongside the main CPU was designed to support the new massive resolution.

The camera was also improved, the one-megapixel to five-megapixel upgraded camera offers a better resolution and image quality. Pictures taken with the new one’s rear camera are drastically better than before. Their larger size, combined with a better image sensor, allows for more detail to be captured. Colours are excellent and detail is well above average when compared to a decent 2012 smartphone’s camera. However this may not be the perfect picture taking apparatus, unless you don’t mind holding up in the air a ten inch screen to take pictures.

As for the wireless speed, the new one is available in two versions: Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi plus 4G.

Now, looking at the benchmarking overall performance of the new one compared to the preceding model. The iPad 3 features an addition of ram from 1gb to 512 mb but the same processor speed of 1ghz. According to GeekBench, “In use, it didn’t feel like the new model was any faster than the original at loading apps or rendering web pages and GeekBench, which uses a set of algorithmic processes to determine overall computing horsepower, confirmed this to be accurate when it gave the iPad 2 a score of 754 in our tests. The new one scored 770. Put into perspective, the original iPad 1 scored 470, so there was a clear performance jump when upgrading from the first generation to the iPad 2. But despite double the RAM, the new iPad doesn’t offer the same speed boost in terms of computing power — it’s all about the screen and the graphics, and a great deal of that new graphical horsepower is rendering more pixels to fill the massive 2,048 x 1,536-pixel resolution required by the Retina Display.”(www.Geekbench.com)

In Conclusion, the iPad third generation, is the best iPad thus far. It will mostly benefit reading, viewing and video editing and gaming in which graphics are most crucial. However if pricing is in the forefront of your decision in choosing a new iPad and you are less concerned with 3D gaming, video/photo editing, the iPad 2 may be a better choice.
